Being different means being exiled from society, I wanted to create a space where trans women can gather, speak and create new vocabularies.
. Language has a way of immortalizing and humanizing people –
The language used in Africa to define and describe queer people has always been extracted from pieces of literature that speak against our existence. This has been especially troubling to me because language is so powerful is responsible for the deaths of many people. Being born queer in Africa gives you one of two choices, hunt yourself or be hunted. Either way, you cannot escape the war. It is always at your door step. There are no choices. Even those who hide, have an arena waiting for them in the shadows.
JUST LIKE YOU is a collection of the debris and the left overs and remnants of this war on our bodies. It is both a memorial and a love letter to African queer bodies. These episodes encapsulate the experiences of queer people during a surge in Africa of anti-gay laws criminalizing the existence of queer bodies. These laws are designed to send a message to gender variant folk that they are unwanted. This podcast, immortalizes them, their experiences, spirituality, fears and love.

“The thing about shame is that it eats at you until it fully consumes you. Then you cannot tell the difference between their shame and your own— between a body and an apology.”
